Volvo mild-hybrid B4, B5, and B6 engines started rolling out last year, notably on the Volvo XC60. The new powertrains provide advanced efficiency and are also a lot smoother and a lot quicker in everyday driving. Here is everything you want to know about new Volvo B mild-hybrid powertrains.
Mild hybrid technology that improves efficiency and performance
Volvo mild-hybrid B4, B5, and B6 engines pair a 48-volt electrical system and a 13-horsepower Integrated Starter Generator to the gas engine, improving a wide range characteristics in the process.
The mild-hybrid system is used when starting your Volvo and it can also be used under hard accelerations or when performance is needed to provide an extra boost. When starting the engine, the ISG helps improve efficiency.
The Volvo B5 engine delivers 247 hp, which on paper seems less than the previous T5 model which had 250 hp. That said, the extra 13 hp of the ISG allows this powertrain to deliver significantly better performance than the outgoing T5. The same can be said for the new B6 which features 295 hp, 310 pound-feet of torque, and the extra 13 hp from the ISG. Give us a call today to learn more about new Volvo B engines.
